Israel/Palestine: What really happened in 1948?

On May 15, the State of Israel commemorates its foundation. But for Palestinians, the anniversary is remembered as Al Nakba (“the Catastrophe”). Contrary to Israeli claims that they declared statehood in response to an Arab war against them, Zionist leaders launched a campaign of ethnic cleansing against a largely defenceless, Palestinian population in April of 1948.

Over 530 Palestinian towns and villages were destroyed and two-thirds of the indigenous Palestinian Arab population were expelled from their homes.
