Miral is a ground-breaking new film by Academy Award nominee Julian Schnabel. It is based on the true story of a young Palestinian woman who finds her previously sheltered life changing forever.

At age 17 Miral leaves the orphanage she grew up in to teach at a refugee camp. It is here that she first becomes aware of the plight her people face.

Schnabel – the award-winning director of The Butterfly and the Diving Bell – explores the Israel-Palestine conflict from a Palestinian perspective.

Sean Penn and Robert De Niro supported the release of Miral at its premiere in the US, despite the controversy whipped up around the film by pro-Zionist forces.

Now Miral has arrived in Australia, a country where the government and the media are only interested in representing Israel’s point of view.

This movie is therefore a must-see for anyone who wants to know the full story behind the conflict in historic Palestine.

Boycott Seacret action to mark Al Nakba

Some participants in the action

Al Nakba – “the catastrophe” – is the name given by Palestinian people to the process of ethnic cleansing that included massacres and dispossession associated with the foundation of the state of Israel in 1948. It is commemorated on May 15 each year. This year is the 63rd anniversary.

In conjunction with other supporters of the international boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) campaign in Australia, Friends of Palestine WA organised a “boycott Seacret” action on May 14 to mark the Nakba. Previous Seacret actions have been reported here, here and here.

Click here for info on why we should boycott the Israeli cosmetics company Seacret.

Fifteen people were involved in the May 14 action which was a successful event. No sales were made at the Seacret stall while the action was taking place and there was a lot of public support for the action. Shopping centre security explicitly told campaigners that we were free to make our point.

Boycott Apartheid Israel, Boycott Seacret

A dozen activists gathered at Carousel shopping centre on May 2 as part of a boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) action against cosmetics company Seacret.

Friends of Palestine WA (FOPWA) called the action in support of the international BDS campaign called for by Palestinian civil society. The aim is to place pressure on Israel to adhere to international law and to end the illegal occupation of Palestine. This pressure can be created by such actions as boycotting Israeli products.

Seacret is an Israeli company that manufactures its products using resources from the Dead Sea – Palestinian land occupied by Israel. The Palestinians themselves are denied entry to the Dead Sea by Israeli military forces.

The activists converged on the stall and consecutively emerged from the crowd to theatrically announce to people passing by the source of Seacret’s products.

On the previous Seacret action organised by FOPWA, centre management had arranged for police to be present before activists arrived. On this occasion, security was caught off guard even though the action was publicly announced.

After the FOPWA activists had made their point at the Seacret stall, the action progressed into a march with the activists shouting chants such as “Free, free Palestine, occupation is a crime” through the centre. Food court patrons listened sympathetically to a speech by FOPWA activists about the BDS campaign and why the occupation needs to be ended.

BDS rooted in law and human rights

[The article below is by Australian Friends of Palestine public advocate Samah Sabawi and was first published here. Quoted first is an editorial comment by AFP's Sonja Karkar explaining the context and that The Australian has so far declined to publish the article.]

The Australian newspaper yesterday published yet another article attacking the Greens and BDS. There have been so many we have lost count. But, counting the number of articles in defence is easy – none have been published by this newspaper and it is not for want of trying. As Australia’s only national newspaper, this does not properly serve a diverse public at all. Australians ought to be allowed to make up their own minds on issues without being constantly hammered with the same excessive views that refuse other voices some space. A national newspaper that indulges in character assassinations and insulting and grievous language for its own ends – such as the word “extremist” used ad nauseum in describing the Greens and BDS – has no respectable place in the world of professional journalism. That is simply gutter tactics. And it is not just the blocking of the Palestinian voice that concerns us, but also the savaging of anyone here who dares to show support for the Palestinian struggle for freedom and justice. Not only are they maliciously and falsely savaged, but they have no way of having their side heard. Please help to make this article go viral on the internet by sending it to your lists and friends and asking them to spread the word. — Sonja Karkar

Freedom is a human rightThe Australian’s unrelenting attack on the Greens and the Boycott Divestment and Sanctions campaign continued today with Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan’s opinion piece entitled “A party of ignorant extremists” April 7, 2011. In this piece, Sheridan lists a number of services Israel offers the Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank and asks if the Greens are willing to boycott these institutions that provide health care, electricity and jobs for Palestinians.

First of all, the services listed fall under Israel’s obligations as an occupying power under the 4th Geneva Convention. They are offered on a very limited basis and are paid for by the PA from International paid funds. The insinuation that Boycotts of Israel would harm the Palestinians is at best patronizing. The call for Boycotts came from Palestinian Civil Society, and is supported by most Palestinians living today in the iron grip of occupation. To try to brand the occupation as being good for the Palestinians reflects a colonial outlook which Palestinians strongly reject.

This orchestrated campaign of misinformation and slurs launched against the Greens in Marrickville is intended to send a chilling message to all politicians. Speak out on the rights of Palestinians and you will be called extreme and anti-semitic.

Anyone who has been involved in the BDS campaign knows that a growing number of Diaspora Jews as well as Israelis from within have also joined this call because they view it as the only way to save Israel from its path of self-destruction. Our politicians here need to understand that as well. Throwing around words like ‘supporting the two state solution’ is empty rhetoric in light of the facts on the grounds today. If not boycotts, I’d like to know what our elected officials are doing to ensure the viability of the two-state solution?

Israel has used decades of negotiations with Palestinians only to expand their settlements and to entrench their occupation. A look at the Palestinian Papers Leaks provides a clear picture of how much Palestinians were willing to compromise – including on the right of return – and how uninterested the Israeli government was in making any head way.

It needs to be made clear that the call for Boycott Divestment and Sanctions is fully rooted in International Humanitarian Law and that the demands made by the BDS call are fully in-line with Australia’s stated foreign policy on the Israeli/Palestinian conflict. BDS demands an end to the systematic discrimination against Palestinians citizens of the state of Israel, an end to Israel’s illegal occupation of Palestinian land as per UNSC resolution 242 and for Israel to meet its obligations under International Humanitarian Law and UN Resolution 194. How can any of these three demands be considered extreme or anti-semitic?

BDS activists, Israelis and Palestinians firmly reject the idea of turning their human tragedy into a football match, with members of our government here in Australia choosing teams, this one is pro-Israel and that one is pro-Palestinian. Palestinians and Israelis have had enough of being used for political gains. BDS activists want the governments of the world to take a pro-justice and pro-human rights stand. Supporters of the BDS amongst the Greens should be congratulated for supporting justice and equality in Palestine/Israel and for endorsing a movement that is rooted in International Humanitarian Law and the Universal Declarations of Human Rights.

Samah Sabawi is the public advocate of Australians for Palestine.

Boycott Seacret action 26 March

Activists arrived at Carousel shopping centre to flashmob and flier at the Seacret deadsea product booth. A small contingent of Israel supporters were there, as were about 10 security guards & even more police.

Activists wore black t-shirts with stickers saying Boycott Apartheid Israel. They were told if any fliers were handed out they would be arrested and one by one the police accosted them declaring that they needed to leave or be arrested for trespass. One activist handed out a flier to a passerby who asked about the protest and was indeed arrested.

The group was very rapidly escorted off the property and regrouped on the lawn. So what is a peaceful group of BDS supporters meant to do when denied the right to protest an illegal product at one shopping mall where they were expected in advance?
They drive off to the next mall with  a Seacret booth where they were not expected of course!

Flyers were distributed to passers-bye and a flashmob was performed to a mostly sympathetic audience in the mall!

Information about Seacret: why boycott?

This flier contains detailed information on how Seacret profits from the occupation of Palestine, and explains the basis of the boycott campaign.

This is the information we will handing out to shoppers around the Seacret kiosk in Carousel on Saturday 26 March (2pm).

The next place we’d like your support is at the Flash Mob at Seacret
Carousel.

This Israeli ‘beauty’ company profits by pillaging the resources of
the Dead Sea. This is to the environmental and economic detriment of
Palestinians, who are not even permitted to walk its shores (even
though much of the coastline is within the internationally recognised
borders of Palestine).

Date: Saturday 26 March (end of Israel Apartheid Week)
Time: 2pm
Where: Seacret kiosk, Carousel Shopping Centre

There is a role for everyone, whether you want to silently hold a
sign, hand our fliers, chant loudly, quietly ask the kiosk staff
questions, film the action or something more creative (we don’t want
to spoil the surprise, so if you want to do something more visible/
creative, send an email to volunteer: FriendsOfPalestine@gmail.com).
